Mongolian Dance in the Face of Globalisation
Abstract
This chapter examines the layered categories of the local, the national and the global through the analysis of Mongolian dances. In the first part, the chapter presents a historical overview of Mongolian dances and shows how Mongolian national dance was built up as the result of encounter between a local dance, the bii biêlgee, and the international standards of Russian classical ballet. The second part examines the contemporary evolution of this paradigm: it displays different ways of ‘national’ choreographing that entail mixing local forms and international norms. The latter are represented by what is locally termed ‘modern dance’ and contemporary dance on the one hand, and by ‘pop-rock’ culture on the other. The chapter also opens up research directions for thinking about the dance-music relationship within contemporary choreographic creations.
Ce texte examine la question de l’étagement des catégories du local, du national et du global à travers l’analyse des danses mongoles. Dans une première partie, l’article présente l’histoire des danses mongoles et montre comment la danse nationale mongole s’est construite au point de convergence entre une danse locale, le bii biêlgee et les normes internationales véhiculées par le ballet classique russe. La seconde partie examine le devenir contemporain de ce modèle en interrogeant différentes façons de chorégraphier « national » en croisant les formes locales et les normes internationales, représentées par la « modern-dance » et la danse contemporaine d’une part, par la culture « pop-rock » de l’autre.
